Kiwifruit
Varieties:
Green Kiwifruit

Green kiwifruit is the most popular kiwifruit. It has fuzzy, brown skin and bright green fruit with black seeds. The flavor is sweet and tangy.

Gold Kiwifruit

Gold kiwifruit, which has golden, yellow flesh and tiny black seeds, is relatively new to the United States. Its brown skin is nearly free of fuzz and it has a sweet, tropical flavor reminiscent of strawberries and bananas. It's essentially the golden-fleshed, super-sweet version of its green cousin.

About Kiwifruit

New Zealand began exporting kiwifruit, then called Chinese gooseberries, to the United States in the 1950’s. American exporters advised New Zealand growers that the name "Chinese gooseberry" was not suitable for the American market, so the growers changed the name of the popular fruit to "kiwifruit,” after the kiwi, New Zealand’s national bird. Both the fruit and the bird are round, brown, fuzzy, and funny looking.

In addition to its sweet taste, one serving of kiwifruit has more vitamin C than an orange, more potassium than a banana, and more fiber than a bowl of bran cereal. Kiwifruit also contains lutein, fiber, copper, folate, magnesium, and vitamin E.

Today, our growers nurture and harvest kiwifruit in Italy, California, Chile, and New Zealand. Learn more about the green and gold kiwifruit we proudly grow for you and your family below.

Kiwifruit Information:

New Zealand began exporting kiwifruit, then called Chinese gooseberries, to the United States in the 1950s. American exporters advised New Zealand growers that the name "Chinese gooseberry" was not suitable for the American market, so the growers changed the name of the popular fruit to "kiwifruit." It's named after New Zealand's national bird, which is round, brown, fuzzy and funny looking - just like the kiwi!

Today, our family of growers nurtures and harvests the kiwifruit in Italy, California, Chile and New Zealand, making them available to eat alone as a snack or to include in fresh, delicious dishes year-round.

In addition to its sweet taste, the kiwifruit is full of nutrients that are good for the body. It has more Vitamin C than an orange and contains lutein, fiber, copper (good for a growing body), potassium (more than a banana), folate, magnesium and Vitamin E. Eating the edible skin is also a plus because it too has nutrients, fiber, Vitamin C and antioxidants that benefit your health.

Avoid fruits with wrinkles or signs of exterior damage. Remember that unripe kiwifruit will be firm to the touch; ripe fruit will give to gentle pressure.
